From Rome to Canada: A Leap of Faith and a New Chapter

Alessio’s path to Ontario began during his final year at university in Rome. A conversation with a close friend sparked an idea: “Why not venture outside of Italy to gain professional experience and explore the world?” This friend had family in Ontario and suggested they apply for temporary work visas in Canada to start a new chapter in their lives. Despite knowing little about Canada—beyond its reputation for friendliness, beauty, and cold winters—Alessio embraced the adventure. “It didn’t take me long to fall in love with this country,” he says. Canada offered not only professional opportunities but also personal fulfillment; he met his future wife, made lifelong friends, and built a life he now cherishes.

Joining Ollon: Finding Purpose and a Place to Grow

In 2015, Alessio’s journey with Ollon began, though not without challenges. After several unsuccessful interviews elsewhere, he finally secured an interview at Ollon. Alessio fondly recalls, “It was the first interview I enjoyed!” When CEO Chris Ellefson offered him a junior developer position, he accepted without hesitation. Although Alessio faced initial hurdles—especially in communicating in English, which is his second language—his colleagues at Ollon welcomed him warmly. He remembers how teammates patiently explained project highlights and supported him both professionally and personally. Over the years, Alessio has witnessed the company’s evolution and remains proud that the same fun, collaborative spirit that initially drew him in still exists. “It feels like I never left that first day—I’m still lucky to be here.” Growing from Junior Developer to Full-Stack Expertise Alessio’s journey to becoming a skilled software developer was not linear. Inspired by a cousin in the tech field, he explored computer science and mobile development back in Italy. One professor ignited Alessio’s passion for mobile technology, leading him to specialize in this area for his thesis. At Ollon, Alessio expanded his focus beyond mobile development. He embraced new technologies and languages, tackling both front-end and back-end projects. His adaptability became one of his greatest strengths. “Every project I joined gave me a chance to either improve a skill or learn something entirely new,” he reflects. Now, with years of experience, Alessio confidently moves across various projects and teams, contributing wherever needed.

A Memorable Project and the Art of Creative Problem-Solving

Alessio recently worked on a project that improved the checkout process for one of Ollon’s clients. As a full-stack developer, he enhanced various aspects of the customer experience, including order creation, subscription management, and payment processing. Alessio attributes the project’s success to meticulous planning and open communication within the team. “The team dynamic was amazing—every meeting felt like a collaboration, whether it was a stand-up or pair programming session.” He also seized this opportunity to learn a new programming language, making the experience both rewarding and enjoyable. “When everything aligns like that, it reminds you why you love what you do.”

Balancing Life, Work, and Hobbies

Outside of work, Alessio enjoys hobbies such as reading, video games, board games, and Dungeons & Dragons. However, one passion stands out: The Lord of the Rings wargaming, which he discovered as a teenager with his brother. Despite his busy schedule, Alessio finds joy in reconnecting with these hobbies alongside colleagues who share similar interests. Having coworkers who enjoy similar pastimes has helped him establish a healthy work-life balance. “Whether it’s gaming, D&D, or even wargaming, finding time to do things I love with friends from work keeps me grounded and happy.”

Creativity in Code: Building with Ingenuity

One of Alessio’s most creative projects involved developing an Android app that interacted with specialized hardware. As the sole developer, he made critical UI decisions and designed flexible code that could adapt to future changes. “I found it fascinating to determine the best way to process data between the app and the hardware,” Alessio explains. His innovative approach ensured that the app could evolve quickly, earning praise from the client for its functionality and foresight.

What’s Next for Alessio at Ollon?

When asked if he would change anything at Ollon, Alessio expressed a desire for more opportunities to work on internal projects. “It would be great to develop products that streamline our processes and showcase what every team member is capable of.” He believes such initiatives could enhance collaboration and allow him to work more closely with newer team members. Alessio’s journey reflects the power of taking risks, embracing new challenges, and continuously learning. His growth from a junior developer struggling with a new language to a versatile full-stack developer at Ollon speaks volumes about his dedication and resilience.
