At Ollon, collaboration and continuous learning are at the core of our values. We are committed to cultivating an environment where emerging talent can thrive, innovate, and contribute to real-world projects. Our co-op students are integral to this mission, bringing fresh ideas, energy, and unique perspectives that strengthen our team and help shape our work's future.
Recently, we had the pleasure of working with three remarkable students—Patrick, Caiya, and Aastha—who completed their co-op placements with us in December. Patrick and Caiya, final-year Computer Science students from Wilfrid Laurier University and Dalhousie University, respectively, joined Ollon, eager to explore the opportunities and challenges of a smaller, remote-first company. Aastha, a graduate of George Brown College, was drawn to Ollon’s commitment to organic growth and strategic partnerships, which led to her transitioning from a co-op position to a full-time role as a marketing and HR associate.
From day one, Patrick and Caiya were immersed in current projects and took on key responsibilities in quality assurance, DevOps, and automated testing using tools like Cypress. Their contributions were essential in developing innovative systems that propelled Ollon forward to deliver exceptional solutions to our clients. Patrick leveraged his knowledge of technologies like Node.js and MySQL to deepen his expertise in backend development and API integrations. Meanwhile, Caiya quickly adapted to Cypress, providing comprehensive automated tests that greatly enhanced the quality of a high-profile website project.
Aastha’s journey was equally transformative. With her diverse academic background, she has always been intrigued by business growth and teamwork. At Ollon, she found an environment that allowed her to apply her passion for marketing, HR, and strategic partnerships. One of her standout projects was leading the Employee Highlight Series—a campaign designed to showcase our internal talent while sharing Ollon's story organically. This initiative strengthened our brand presence and reinforced our commitment to recognizing and celebrating our team members. Aastha was particularly inspired by Ollon’s emphasis on authenticity in marketing, a principle championed by our leadership, which fueled her satisfaction in contributing to the company’s growth.
Throughout their time with us, all three students enhanced essential soft skills. Their remote work experience refined their digital communication abilities, and managing various projects improved their adaptability and organizational skills. Patrick and Caiya gained confidence in navigating agile development processes, while Aastha deepened her expertise in content strategy, client engagement, and brand positioning. The fast-paced environment also challenged them to think critically, manage priorities effectively, and embrace a proactive approach to problem-solving.
A noteworthy element of their experience at Ollon was our collaborative and supportive culture. Daily morning check-ins created opportunities for connection, idea-sharing, and witnessing the power of cross-functional teamwork within a smaller company. This open and inclusive environment fostered a sense of belonging and encouraged individuals to contribute their unique perspectives and skills.
As Patrick, Caiya, and Aastha reflect on their co-op placements, their experiences have left a lasting impact. Patrick credits his time at Ollon with reinforcing his passion for software development and equipping him with the skills needed to excel in remote work. Caiya emphasizes the importance of adaptability and seizing learning opportunities. Aastha, now continuing her journey with us as a full-time employee, appreciates the invaluable mentorship and professional growth she has experienced, highlighting the significance of working in a company that nurtures innovation and collaboration.
Ollon is more than just a workplace; it’s a space where talent flourishes, ideas come to life, and people grow together. As a remote-first software development firm, we empower our team members—both co-op students and full-time employees—to take ownership of their work and drive meaningful change.
