At Ollon we believe in the power of continuous learning, diverse experiences, and the unique stories each team member brings. One such journey is that of Michelle, who joined Ollon in 2017 and has since become a valuable part of our development team, bringing expertise in image processing, machine learning, and full-stack development.
The promise of opportunity drove Michelle Fang Chen to start a new chapter in Ontario. "The reputation of Canada for being welcoming and diverse was a major attraction. Ontario has more education and job opportunities, so I decided to start my journey here,” she explains. Michelle moved to Canada from China in 2008, where she completed her master's degree at university. After graduation, she worked at AprilAge before joining the Ollon team in 2017. Ollon’s welcoming environment provided a solid foundation for Michelle to transition from academic research into a dynamic career in software development.
Her pathway into the field began with a solid educational background. "At university, I focused on research in image processing and machine learning," Michelle shares. "I became a software developer after graduation when a job opportunity aligned with my educational background." This foundation in technical disciplines prepared her to tackle various development challenges at Ollon.
Since joining the team, Michelle has worked on numerous projects that have broadened her skill set and strengthened her role as a full-stack developer. "I started my career by developing a desktop application using C++ to implement image processing and machine learning algorithms. Then, I became involved in various projects, such as website and mobile app development," she recalled. She has experience with several programming languages, including Python, PHP, SQL, JavaScript, and Java, enabling her to contribute effectively to front-end and back-end projects.
Reflecting on a recent achievement, Michelle highlighted her work on upgrading a web application. "Recently, I’ve been working on a project to redesign both the back-end and front-end, integrating cloud services into the system," she notes. "I built the back-end independently and introduced Object-Relational Mapping libraries to streamline database interactions. I also contributed to integrating new dependencies on the front end to enhance functionality and improve efficiency." This project showcased her technical skills and commitment to delivering versatile, high-quality solutions.
Balancing personal life with development work can be challenging, but Michelle finds Ollon's culture supportive. "Ollon has flexible hours and remote work options, which are beneficial for managing my commitments," she says. Outside of work, she prioritizes time with family, valuing the ability to maintain a healthy work-life balance.
Creativity and attention to detail are integral to Michelle’s approach to development. "As a detail-oriented person, I can spot overlooked information in various projects and propose effective solutions," she shared. This mindset has driven her to innovate within projects, such as exploring advanced machine learning algorithms for a mobile app, where she successfully deployed new techniques to enhance the product.
Michelle's story exemplifies the growth mindset encouraged at Ollon, where diverse backgrounds and continuous learning are embraced. Her journey highlights the collaborative spirit and drive for excellence that define Ollon’s close-knit team, and we look forward to seeing more of her innovative contributions in the future.
